Statement by UNODC Chief after signing of revised Joint Action Plan between UNODC and Japan

VIENNA, 7 October (UN Information Service) - The Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Yury Fedotov, today warmly welcomed the signing of a renewed and strengthened Joint Action Plan between the Vienna-based UN organization and Japan.

New articles are included in the Joint Action Plan dedicated to following up on the UN General Assembly special session (UNGASS) on the world drug problem and corruption as well as the specific outcomes from the G-7 Summit in Japan. There was also agreement to review articles based on the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), South-East Asia and counter-terrorism.

Mr. Fedotov noted that the renewed agreement indicated the strength of the unique relationship existing between UNODC and Japan and the invaluable support and assistance offered by the country. He said it was a relationship that enabled UNODC to continue to meet the complex and fluid challenges of drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism.

The signing ceremony, attended by Japanese Ambassador, Mitsuru Kitano, is the result of a strategic dialogue that takes place between UNODC and Japan every year and leads to the annual revision of the Joint Action Plan.
