UNIPORT Event "Working for the UN"

On 20 March 2013 the UNIPORT - career service of the University of Vienna, organized a meeting with the UNIS Vienna Director Janos Tisovszky who gave a presentation for students entitled "Working for the United Nations".

The young people have shown great interest in finding out about the possibilities of working with the United Nations. During the presentation the students were given a comprehensive insight into the different career options available within the United Nations.

The UNIS Vienna Director underlined the current importance of outreach as a crucial part of today's UN activities. "There is a lot of interaction between civil society and the UN nowadays, which plays an important role in the organization's functioning," said Janos Tisovszky.

Based upon the current policy of staff mobility that implies moving around from field-based jobs to headquarters, the UNIS Director outlined different ways people can get involved in UN work: from volunteering to peacekeeping and participating in political missions.

It was especially useful for the students to find out more about the requirements for different job vacancies at the UN. This included important tips for online applications and CVs as well as general advice for the competency-based interview technique.

The presentation ended with a round of questions from the audience that touched upon what professional experience was needed for certain vacancies, and how the application process works. The excitement around the event has been a clear sign that working for the UN is an appealing prospect for the young people and will help contribute to their professional success.
