"Teaching the United Nations" - that was the topic of a series of workshops for teachers organized by the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna in cooperation with the Pädagogische Hochschule Vienna on 9, 16 and 23 November 2011 at the Vienna International Centre.
The three half-day workshops presented educational material, online learning tools and UNIS services for teachers and school classes aimed at reaching out to teachers as key partners who can bring the UN and its work closer to children and young people.
Twenty teachers from different schools in Vienna participated in the course which provided an introduction to the work of the United Nations and its main priorities to address global issues such as peace and security, development and human rights.
Relevant teaching manuals, online games and quizzes were presented to the teachers who also found out more about UNIS events and special guided tours and campaigns, as well as how to find further background information, publications, and useful websites of different UN entities and programmes working in the different fields. There were also discussions on how to use all these tools in school to raise awareness and interest of students in these topics.
