 New Permanent Representative of Malaysia

  VIENNA, 2 October (UN Information Service) -- The new Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations (Vienna), Gulam Hussein bin Gulam Hanif, paid an introductory courtesy visit today to Pino Arlacchi, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). Ambassador Hussein was accredited to the United Nations (Vienna) on 14 August 2000. 

 Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Hussein served as Under Secretary at the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

 Between 1979 and 1982, Mr. Hussein was appointed to the administrative and diplomatic service of Malaysia and served as Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The following year he became Second Secretary at the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila, The Philippines. Between 1985 and 1987 he was first Assistant Secretary and then Principal Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malaysia.

 In 1988, Mr. Hussein became a Counsellor at the Malaysian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he remained until 1995. He then returned to be a Principal Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Malaysia. 

 Mr. Hussein graduated with honors in Economics from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He holds a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. 

 He is married and has one child.
