Receives World Police Prize 2000

  VIENNA, 17 April (UN Information Service) — The Vienna-based UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP)  today received the International Police Association’s World Police Prize 2000 in recognition of “exceptional service to the police and the community”.

 The award — a statue representing justice and a check for SF 10,000 — was presented to ODCCP Executive Director Pino Arlacchi by Association President Armand Jaminet in the presence of delegates attending the concluding session of the Tenth UN Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, which has been meeting here since 10 April.

 The International Police Association, a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the UN, has 300,000 members in 61 countries, representing police officers of all ranks. It aims to promote mutual assistance among police officers at both national and international levels.
