 Fifth Committee Elects Vice-Chairman

NEW YORK, 22 September (UN Headquarters) – In a short meeting this morning, the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) elected, by acclamation, Collen Vixen Kelapile (Botswana) as its third Vice-Chairman, thus concluding the organizational part of this session.  The decision was taken following consultations within the Group of African States.

Speaking on organizational matters, the representatives of Cuba and Brazil asked questions of the preparedness of documentation and the programme of work for the beginning of October.  The Chairman of the Committee, Gert Rosenthal (Guatemala), said that the documents to be presented at the next meeting were available in the Conference Room.

The representative of Côte d’Ivoire inquired about the subject of the briefing by the Under-Secretary-General for Management, Joseph Connor, which is scheduled for next Wednesday.  Committee Secretary Joseph Acakpo-Satchivi informed the Committee that the briefing would be devoted to the main issues before this session of the Fifth Committee, including human resources management reform, the capital master plan and information technology.

The Committee will hold its next meeting at 10 a.m. on 27 September, to begin its general discussion on its agenda item on reviewing the efficiency of the Organization, and to conclude its consideration of requests for exemptions from sanctions imposed under Article 19 of the United Nations Charter.
