Secretary-General Hails Release of “Virtually All” Sierra Leone Peacekeepers

NEW YORK, 30  Mai (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued on 28 May by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is delighted with the news out of Liberia that virtually all of the detained peacekeepers in Sierra Leone have been freed.

He is grateful to the West African leaders who pushed hard for this outcome, and in particular to President Charles Taylor of Liberia who took the lead in arranging the peacekeepers' release.

The Secretary-General hopes that the freeing of the remaining peacekeepers will help create conditions in which the long and agonizing search for peace and stability in Sierra Leone can at last be brought to a successful conclusion.
