NEW YORK, 6 October (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the release today of the two British police officers working as part of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), who were arrested in Montenegro by federal armed forces on 31 July 2000.

The Secretary-General believes that the release of the two British police officers is encouraging, and he calls for an early release of the remaining Canadian and Dutch nationals still under detention in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
