Secretary-General Welcomes Planet Project World Interactive Poll

NEW YORK, 15 November (UN Headquarters) -- Following is the text of a statement issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the “Planet Project Poll” -- the world’s largest Internet- based poll that will be held from 15 to 18 November.  The initiative, organized by several leading technology and polling companies, will contribute to a greater understanding among peoples and help create a worldwide dialogue across cultures and geographical boundaries on issues of interest to all humanity.

Millions of people, in all corners of the world, will participate in this poll by Internet on a wide range of topics, varying from health to marriage to crime.  Even the opinion of those who live in areas with limited Internet penetration will be recorded.  More than 500 Planet Pollsters have been sent to those areas equipped with laptops, hand-held devices and modems including portable satellite up-links.  The poll provides a powerful example of how new technologies can be used for real world information.

Currently, the United Nations is working with the two leading companies of the Planet Project -- 3Com Corporation and Harris Interactive -- to explore the possibilities of a closer collaboration with similar polls in the future and to enhance the interaction of the United Nations with individuals living all over the world.
