NANA EFFAH-APENTENG OF GHANA ELECTED CHAIRMAN NEW YORK, 13 September (UN Headquarters) -- The Permanent Representative of Ghana, Nana Effah-Apenteng, was elected Chairman of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today. Prior to his appointment as Permanent Representative in May 2000, Mr. Effah-Apenteng served as the Supervising Director of Administration in his country's Foreign Ministry. Before that, he was the Deputy Chief of Mission (from 1993 to 1997) in the Ghanaian Embassy in Washington, United States. He joined the Ghanaian Foreign Service in 1970, and has also served as Chargé d’affaires and later as Counsellor/Minister Counsellor in the Ghanaian Embassy in Moscow from 1986 to 1988, and as Deputy Chief of Mission in the Ghanaian Embassy in Rome from 1988 to 1990. From 1992 to 1993, he was the Director of the Estates and General Services Bureau in the Foreign Ministry. He was Deputy Director, from 1990 to 1991, of the Non-Aligned Movement secretariat, which was responsible for Ghana’s preparations for hosting the tenth Non-Aligned Movement Ministerial Conference. From 1991 to 1993, he served as Assistant Director of the International Conference Centre in Accra. Mr. Effah-Apenteng completed the Foreign Service Officers’ Course in International Relations at Oxford in 1975, with distinction. He also has a diploma in public administration, received in 1974 from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science (1968) and a Master’s degree in African Studies (1970) from the University of Ghana. Born in Bombata, Ashanti, Mr. Effah-Apenteng is married with three sons. He is the Paramount Chief of Bombata Traditional Area, Ashanti. His interests include reading, sports and music. * *** * |
