PIERRE LELONG OF HAITI ELECTED CHAIRMAN
NEW YORK, 13 September (UN Headquarters) -- Haiti’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Pierre Lelong, has been elected Chairman of the Sixth Committee (Legal) for the fifty-sixth session of the General Assembly. Mr. Lelong has been serving as his country’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations since 1996. From 1991 to 1995, he was Haiti’s Ambassador to Mexico. He has represented the Government of Haiti at the Organization of the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean; the Inter-American Conference on Social Security; the Latin American and Caribbean Sugar Exporting Countries; and, the Pan American Institute of Geography and History. He has also participated in numerous international conferences. Mr. Lelong was a professor of Structural Analysis and Design at the Faculty of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico from 1975 to 1990. He has diplomas in civil engineering and in political science from that university. He is the author of many academic publications. Mr. Lelong, born on 5 January 1936 in Haiti, is married and the father of two children. He speaks Creole, French, Spanish and English. * *** * |
