SECRETARY-GENERAL COMMENDS CONCLUSION |
|||
NEW YORK, 29 December (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issue today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan: The Secretary-General has been following closely the electoral process in Ghana, which ended with the second round of the presidential elections held on 28 December. The Secretary-General commends the people of Ghana and their leaders for the transparent and peaceful manner in which the elections were conducted. With these elections, Ghana has demonstrated that democracy and its institutions continue to take root in Africa. The international community should rejoice at this orderly and democratic transfer of power and stand ready to help Ghana and other new democracies consolidate their hard-won gains. |
