SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES CONCERN
ABOUT MIDDLE EAST INCIDENT

NEW YORK, 16 February (UN Headquarters) -- Following is the text of a statement issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is very concerned about the incident today in which Hezbollah attacked an Israel Defence Force patrol in the Shaba Farms area, killing one Israeli soldier and injuring two others, to which the Israelis reacted with mortar and artillery fire into South Lebanon. The Secretary-General notes that these hostilities contravene binding decisions of the Security Council and calls on those concerned to cease all violence.
