SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES SUDAN GOVERNMENT DECISION TO HALT AIR ATTACKS IN NUBA MOUNTAINS, SOUTHERN SUDAN

NEW YORK, 25 May (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement by the Government of the Sudan that they have declared on 24 May 2001 an immediate halt to aerial attacks in southern Sudan and the Nuba Mountains. He hopes that this positive step will help reduce the sufferings of the people in these areas and will also enhance the prospects for peace.
