NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MYANMAR
PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

VIENNA, 20 September (UN Information Service) -- The new Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations (Vienna), U Nyunt Maung Shein, presented his credentials on Friday to Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Shein was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany and from 2001 to 2002 he served as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. From 1998 to 2000 he served as Director-General of the Political Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Myanmar and for the previous year he was Director-General of the Foreign Languages Department. Before he became Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Myanmar in Bangkok in 1994, Mr. Shein served in the same post in Tokyo from 1992 to 1994.

Mr. Shein joined Myanmar’s Foreign Service as Third Secretary in 1968. He was Third Secretary in Bern between 1971 and 1975, and in Hanoi between 1975 and 1978. From 1985 to 1987 he was First Secretary at the Embassy of Myanmar in Bangkok.

Mr. Shein holds degrees in physics from the Arts and Science University of Yangon, Myanmar, and a Masters in International Public Policy from the John Hopkins University in Washington D.C., USA.

Mr. Shein is married.
