NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF KAZAKHSTAN
PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

VIENNA, 17 December (UN Information Service) -- The new Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations (Vienna), Dr. Rakhat Aliyev, has presented his credentials today to Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).

Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Aliyev was President of the National Olympic Committee (since January 2002).

From 2001 to 2002, he was Deputy Head of the Security Service of the President of the Republic Kazakhstan; and from 1999 to 2001, he was Head of the Department and First Vice-Chairman of the National Security Committee.

Other posts he has held are First Vice-Minister of the Ministry of State Revenues (1998-1999), Chariman of the Committee of Tax Police in the Ministry of Finance (1997-1998); Head of the Division of Smuggling and Corruption Control and First Deputy Head of the State Tax Committee in the Almaty region (1996-1997); Head of commercial trade and manufacturing companies (1994-1996); Director General of the External Trade Company (1993-1994) and Deputy Head of the Executive Department in the Ministry of External Economic Affairs in Alamty. From 1986 to 1993 he served as Laboratory Assistant, Intern, Scientific Researcher and Chief Scientific Researcher in Surgery in the Kazakhstan Scientific Research Institute in Almaty.

Born on 10 December 1962, Dr. Aliyev graduated from the State Medical Institute (MD) and the High School of Law (Masters degree) in Almaty.

He is married with three children.
