UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL IN VIENNA

Iraq Talks, 4 and 5 July 2002

VIENNA, 3 July (UN Information Service) -- The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has arrived in Vienna today for the next round of talks with the Iraqi Government which will take place on 4 & 5 July at the United Nations offices in Vienna.

The UN’s official delegation, to be led by the Secretary-General, will include Hans Blix, the Executive Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), Mohammed ElBaradei, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Hans Corell, the UN Legal Counsel, and Yuli Vorontsov, the High Level Coordinator on Iraq. A number of experts will also be part of the UN delegation.

The Iraqi delegation will be headed by the Foreign Minister, Naji Sabri.

The previous rounds of talks were held in New York on 7 March and from 1-3 May.

Later today the Secretary-General will meet Alvaro de Soto, the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Cyprus. The Secretary-General will depart for Durban, South Africa on Saturday 6 July to attend the Organization of African Unity summit.
