UNITED NATIONS TO HOLD
FIRST WORKSHOP ON SPACE LAW

(The Hague, 18 to 21 November 2002)

VIENNA, 7 November (UN Information Service) -- The United Nations is holding its first workshop on space law from 18 to 21 November in The Hague, The Netherlands. The workshop is being organized jointly with the International Institute of Air and Space Law (IIASL) of Leiden University and is hosted by the Government of the Netherlands.

The workshop will bring together representatives of national justice departments, civil aviation authorities and space agencies, as well as experts from international organizations, universities and private law firms.

The main aim of the workshop is to increase understanding and acceptance of the United Nations treaties and principles on outer space. The participants will also have the opportunity to exchange information on domestic space laws and policies, for the benefit of professionals involved in the development and administration of these laws and policies. The workshop is also organized to promote university level programmes in space law with the intention to increase the expertise available in this field.
