MEDIA ARRANGEMENTS

FOR THE

MINISTERIAL SEGMENT OF THE FORTY-SIXTH SESSION OF THE COMMISSION ON NARCOTIC DRUGS (CND)

held on 16-17 April 2003
at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV)

General Information: The Ministerial Segment of the Forty-Sixth Session of the Commission on Narcotics Drugs (CND) will be held on 16 and 17 April 2003 at the Austria Center adjoining the Vienna International Centre (VIC).

Photo Opportunity: A brief photo opportunity for TV/photographers only will be organized prior to the start of the formal opening which will take place on Wednesday, 16 April at 9.30 a.m. at Hall D of the Austria Center. Interested media are requested to arrive by 9.15 a.m. This may be a pool arrangement, or it may be open to all TV/photographers.

Press Briefings: A Ministerial Segment Preview Press Briefing will be held on 15 April, 11 a.m., in Room CO3, Vienna International Centre.

On Tuesday, 15 April at 11 a.m. (Vienna International Centre – Room CO3) – Ministerial Segment Preview Press Briefing with the CND Chairman, Patricia Olamendi of Mexico; Antonio Maria Costa, the Executive Director, UNODC; and James Callahan, Director of the Division for Treaty Affairs, UNODC.

On Wednesday, 16 April – (tentatively 1:30 p.m.) at Austria Center Press Briefing Room, D 357 - Press briefing(s) with chairmen/speakers of the ancillary technical experts meetings (on HIV/AIDS, treatment and rehabilitation, law enforcement and alternative development)

On Wednesday, 16 April, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., – NGO Committee on Narcotic Drugs Forum on UNODC Operational Priorities: How NGOs Can Help (Vienna International Centre – Conference Room I)

On Thursday, 17 April (tentatively 1:30 p.m. – Austria Center Press Working Area) – Press briefing with the CND Chairman, Mr. Costa, and chairmen of all four round-tables discussing the following drug control issues:

  • Challenges, new trends and patterns of the world drug problem;
  • Countering illicit drug supply;
  • Strengthening international cooperation in countering the world drug problem, based on the principle of shared responsibility; and
  • Demand reduction and preventive policies

Other details or changes in the time or venue of press briefings for the Ministerial segment will be announced later. We will advertise them on the flip chart in the journalist’s working area set up for the Ministerial segment (D357 and the foyer in front of D357, Austria Center) as soon as we have the information.

Media Facilities: There are facilities for journalists in D357 and the Foyer in front of D357 in the Austria Center. D357 has 3 PC workstations and 3 plug-ins for notebooks at the back of the premises. In addition, there are 2 plug-ins for notebooks in the foyer in front of D357, which can be accessed via modem dial-up. There are also three telephone lines for local calls.

In the foyer in front of D357 there will be a counter, manned by a UNIS staff member. A fax machine (+43-1-26060-6728), a telephone, both with international access codes, and a photocopier will be available.

TV, available both in D357 and in the Foyer, will provide closed circuit broadcasting of the CND Ministerial segment, as well as CNN.

ACV Access: Access to the ACV is through the main ACV entrance, or through the G-building of the Vienna International Centre. Once accreditation has been issued at Gate 1 of the Vienna International Centre, you can either exit the VIC or walk over to the Austria Center to access the main entrance. Or after receiving your pass you can proceed to G-building, where you can cross over directly to the ACV at the OE level.
