PRESS STATEMENT ON AFGHANISTAN BY
SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

NEW YORK, 18 November (UN Headquarters) -- Following is the text of the press statement on Afghanistan delivered on 17 November by Security Council President Ismael Abraão Gaspar Martins (Angola):

Members of the Security Council condemned unequivocally the murder on 16 November of Bettina Goislard, a staff member for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Her murder was a cowardly act by those who wish to undermine the efforts of the international community to assist the Afghan people in creating a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

Council members called on the Afghan authorities to make every effort to bring to justice the perpetrators of this crime.

Council members reaffirmed their full support for the work of the United Nations and its agencies in Afghanistan, often in the most difficult circumstances.

Council members expressed their profound condolences to Ms. Goislard’s family.
