SECRETARY-GENERAL’S ENVOY SET FOR NEW BID TO REVIVE MYANMAR RECONCILIATION PROCESS

NEW YORK, 22 September (UN Headquarters) -- The Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan issued the following statement today:

Mr. Razali Ismail, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Myanmar, will visit Myanmar from 30 September to 2 October 2003. It will be his eleventh mission.

The Secretary-General, who is following closely developments in Myanmar, expects Mr. Razali to discuss with Prime Minister General Khin Nyunt and other government leaders ways in which to revive the national reconciliation process, which came to a standstill after the incident of 30 May.

The Secretary-General remains concerned about the well-being of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other NLD leaders and reiterates his call that they should be released without further delay. He expects his Special Envoy to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, find out her condition, and work with government officials towards her immediate and unconditional release.

Mr. Razali will be in New York tomorrow for consultations before travelling to Myanmar.
