SECRETARY-GENERAL CONGRATULATES AD HOC COMMITTEE ON SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION OF NEGOTIATIONS ON UN CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION

NEW YORK, 1 October (UN Headquarters) -- Following is the message by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the members of the Ad Hoc Committee on the negotiation of the Convention against Corruption in Vienna, delivered by Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna:

I am pleased to extend my best wishes and congratulations to the Ad Hoc Committee on the successful conclusion of the negotiation process leading to the United Nations Convention on Corruption. It is particularly heartening that you were able to complete this process in less than two years.

I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the late Ambassador Héctor Charry Samper for his leadership, dedication and expertise in chairing the Committee. He will be greatly missed.

This Convention can make a real difference to the quality of life of millions of people around the world. I urge Member States to continue demonstrating their commitment with their signature at the Mérida Conference in December.
