General Assembly Decides to Add Agenda Items on Year of Physics, Financing for Peacekeeping in Burundi, International Service Commission

NEW YORK, 24 May (UN Headquarters) -- In a brief meeting this morning, the General Assembly, acting on recommendations of its General Committee, decided to include several items in the agenda for its current session, including the “International Year of Physics, 2005” and the financing of the United Nations Operation in Burundi. 

The Assembly decided that the item entitled “International Year of Physics, 2005” would be considered directly in plenary meeting.  [For further information on the General Committee’s meeting, see Press Release GA/10241 of 20 May 2004.]

In other action, in view of the urgency of the matter, the Assembly also decided to include the financing of the United Nations Operation in Burundi in the agenda for the fifty-eighth session, waiving the General Committee’s consideration of the item.  The Security Council authorized the new operation on Friday, 21 May. 

Also this morning, the Assembly decided to include in the agenda for the current session the item entitled “Appointment of a member of the International Civil Service Commission” as a sub-item of agenda 17, namely “Appointments to fill vacancies in subsidiary organs and other appointments”.  That item, it was decided, would be allocated to the Assembly’s Fifth Committee.

At the outset of the meeting, the Assembly took note of the fact that Suriname had made the necessary payment to reduce its arrears below the amount specified in Article 19 of the Charter. 

The Assembly will meet again at a date and time to be announced in the Journal.
