Security Council Committee on Côte d’Ivoire Begins Work, Draws Attention to Arms Embargo Imposed by Resolution 1572
NEW YORK, 6 December (UN Headquarters) -- The Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1572 (2004) concerning Côte d’Ivoire, held its first meeting today, 6 December 2004.
The Committee’s task is to oversee the implementation of the measures imposed on Côte d’Ivoire by resolution 1572 (2004) as follows:
-- Firstly, an arms embargo which took effect upon adoption of the resolution on 15 November 2004;
-- Secondly, a travel ban and an assets freeze regarding certain individuals and entities as specified in the resolution, which shall enter into force on 15 December 2004, unless the Security Council shall determine before then that the signatories of the Linas-Marcoussis and Accra III Agreements have implemented all their commitments under the Accra III Agreement and are embarked towards full implementation of the Linas-Marcoussis Agreement. If these measures enter into force, the Committee will establish and make publicly available a list of individuals and entities who will be subject thereof.
The Committee will also consider and decide upon requests for exemptions to the measures as specified in the resolution. It will closely interact with all States concerned and regularly report to the Security Council on its work.
The Committee looks forward with interest to receiving, by 15 February 2005, the reports from all States concerned, and in particular those in the region, on the actions they have taken to implement the resolution.
