Secretary-General Calls on All Those Concerned in Iraq to Respect International Law, Particularly Regarding Protection of Civilians
NEW YORK, 8 April (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General has been following with grave preoccupation the deterioration in the security situation and loss of life in Iraq over the last few days.
The Secretary-General strongly believes that an inclusive dialogue and a patiently pursued political process involving all Iraqi constituencies are essential at this particularly sensitive phase on the road towards the restoration of sovereignty, stability and the rule of law. His Special Adviser, Lakhdar Brahimi, and his team are currently in Iraq to support the Iraqi people to achieve these objectives.
The Secretary-General calls upon all those concerned to respect international law, particularly in regard to the protection of civilians in armed conflict, and to intensify their efforts to end the current crisis. He urges all parties to allow full access to civilians who may require urgent medical and other assistance.
