Secretary-General Strongly Condemns Terrorist Attacks in India

NEW YORK, 4 October (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued on 2 October by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has learned with shock and dismay the news of bomb and gunfire attacks that took place today in crowded public places in Nagaland and Assam states, India, which have claimed the lives of a large number of people.

The Secretary-General strongly condemns these terrorist attacks. No cause or grievance can justify such senseless and cruel acts that target innocent civilians. He expresses his sincere condolences to the victims and their families.
