New Permanent Representative of India Presents Credentials

VIENNA, 3 September (UN Information Service) -- The New Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Sheel Kant Sharma, presented his credentials today to Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General, UNOV.

Prior to his current appointment Mr. Sharma served as Additional Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) since 2003. He has served in various capacities at the MEA, including as Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs) from 2000-2003; Joint Secretary (South and Disarmament) from 1991-1994; Director, United Nations Division and Disarmament Head (1989-1991); Deputy Secretary (North) from 1982-1983 and Under-Secretary in the Middle East desk from 1977-1981.

In the course of his career, he has also been deputed to the International Atomic Energy Agency Secretariat in Vienna in the Office for External Relations and Policy Coordination from 1994-2000, served as Counsellor in the Embassy of India in Algiers (1986-1989) and as First Secretary (Disarmament) in the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva (1983-1986).

Mr. Sharma earned a Masters degree in Nuclear Physics and a Doctorate in High Energy Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India.
