Minister of Justice of Thailand Elected President of Eleventh United Nations Crime Congress

Suwat Liptapanlop, Minister of Justice of Thailand, was elected this morning as President of the Eleventh United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

Before Mr. Liptapanlop was appointed to his current position on 11 March 2005, he had served in a number of public functions.  He was a Member of Parliament and Secretary-General of the Chatpattana Party before he was appointed in 1990 as Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication.  He served in that position until 1992.

In 1995, he was appointed as Minister of Science Technology and Environment; in 1997, as Minister of Transport and Communications; and, in 1999, as Minister of Industry.  He was also Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of University Affairs.  On 30 June 2004, he became Deputy Prime Minister.

In 1996, Mr. Liptapanlop was decorated as Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the most Exalted Order of the White Elephant.  He was born on 9 February 1955 in Ratchaburi Province and received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Kasetsart University and a Master of Science in communications engineering (transportation) from Purdue University in the United States.

A Buddhist, Mr. Liptapanlop is married to Colonel Poonpirom Liptapanlop.
