Bonn Talks to Promote Progress on Climate Change Convention, Kyoto Protocol to Be Held 16 – 27 May

BONN, 9 May (UNFCCC) -- The next series of international meetings on work under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol will take place in Bonn from 16 to 27 May 2005.
The May meetings will include:
-- A seminar of governmental experts on 16 and 17 May. This will be an informal event where governments will present their current policies and assess what will be needed to continue to develop effective and appropriate response to climate change. It is anticipated that presenters will be senior-level expert negotiators. Abstracts are available on the UNFCCC website. The seminar will be opened by Joke Waller-Hunter, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Jürgen Trittin, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany, and Ginés Gonzáles García, President of the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties.
-- The twenty-second session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) from 19 to 27 May. This session will initiate the development of a programme of work on adaptation to climate change impacts; it will receive a newly adopted Special Report on safeguarding the ozone layer and the global climate system prepared by the IPCC (see www.ipcc.ch) and the scientific advisory body to the Montreal Protocol -- TEAP; it will consider the growth of emissions from international aviation and feature special events on mitigation policies and measures and technology innovation.
-- The twenty-second session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation from 20 to 27 May. Among other issues, the session will consider the frequency of reporting by developing countries and a range of funding issues, including how to maximize support for the least developed countries when adapting to climate change. For the first time, Parties will also consider ways to make UNFCCC meetings climate (carbon) neutral.
