Press Statement by Security Council President on Attempted Assassination of Lebanese Journalist
NEW YORK, 28 September (UN Headquarters) -- Following is today's press statement by Security Council President Lauro Baja (Philippines) on the attempted assassination of May Chidiac:
The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the attempted assassination of May Chidiac, a prominent and respected Lebanese journalist, near Beirut on 25 September 2005, a few days only after another terrorist attack in Beirut killed one and caused injury to several others.
They expressed their deepest sympathy to Ms. Chidiac and her family and wished her a speedy recovery.
The members of the Security Council welcomed the determination of the Lebanese Government to bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this and other terrorist attacks. They encouraged Member States in a position to do so to respond positively to any request for assistance in this regard emanating from the Lebanese Government.
The members of the Security Council warned that those responsible for such crimes will not be permitted to jeopardize the stability, sovereignty, democracy and national unity of Lebanon.
