Secretary-General Hopes Sweden's Leaders' Network Initiative Will Translate World Summit Commitments into Action
NEW YORK, 19 September (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General welcomes the initiative of the Prime Minister of Sweden, Göran Persson, to create a "Leaders' Network in support of UN reform".
The 2005 World Summit Document adopted by world leaders is a far-reaching package of changes to strengthen the collective response to global challenges in development, in security and in human rights, and to make the United Nations a more effective instrument of its members' collective will. Now, Member States must implement what has been agreed. That is why the sixtieth session of the General Assembly -- of which Sweden holds the Presidency -- is so important.
The Secretary-General strongly encourages other countries to support this initiative. He hopes that the Leaders' Network can help translate the commitments made at the World Summit into effective action.
