Secretary-General Welcomes Liberia's 103 Treaty Actions at UN Event

NEW YORK, 16 September (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the 103 treaty actions submitted today by the Government of Liberia at this year's United Nations treaty event, and congratulates Chairman Bryant on this initiative.

This is a landmark in Liberia's journey away from a difficult past and towards a more tenable future grounded in the rule of law, respect for human rights, and good democratic governance.

The United Nations and its partners stand ready to support the Liberian Government in ensuring that this range of new treaty obligations is fulfilled.
