Secretary-General Congratulates Government, People of Burundi on Successful Conduct of Elections
NEW YORK, 6 July (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General would like to congratulate the Transitional Government of Burundi and the Burundian people for the successful and peaceful conduct of the legislative elections on 4 July.
In reiterating his satisfaction with the major progress achieved in the peace process in Burundi over the last year, the Secretary-General calls on the Burundian parties to continue to work together in the spirit of the Arusha Agreement in implementing this final and most crucial phase of the transition, leading to the transfer of authority to an elected Government on 26 August 2005.
