New Permanent Representative of Israel Presents Credentials

VIENNA, 11 February (UN Information Service) -- The new Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Dan Ashbel, presented his credentials today to Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General, UNOV.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Ashbel was serving as the Director of the Division for European Multilateral Institutions, and Israel’s Coordinator for the Euro-Med Partnership (2000-05) in Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Ashbel has served in many capacities in the course of his career, including as: Israel’s Consul General for the Mid-Atlantic region in Philadelphia, United States of America (1997-2000); Counsellor at the Embassy of Israel in London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1989-92), and in Vienna, Austria (1986-89); and First Secretary at the Embassy of Israel in Bonn, Germany (1978-83).

He has also served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem as: Director of the Europe II Division (1996-97), Instructor in Israel’s National Defence College (1994-96), Director of the Training Division (1993-94), in charge of Israel’s cooperation programmes with the Central Asian States (1992-93), Chief Assistant to the Spokesman (1984-86) and Head of Office of the Director of the Center for Political Research (1983-84).

Mr. Ashbel completed his Bachelors Degree in Geography and English, and Masters Degree in Political Science, specializing in the Middle East, at the University of Haifa, Israel. He is married and has three children.
