Press Statement on Afghanistan Terror Attack by Security Council President

NEW YORK, 15 May (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement to the press was delivered today by Security Council President Basile Ikouebe (Congo):

The members of the Security Council were shocked by the terrorist attack on a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) vehicle in the province of Herat on 12 May 2006, and condemned the attack in the strongest terms.  They expressed their condolences to the families of the victims, namely two UNICEF staff and a non-governmental organization doctor.  They reiterated their concern at the increasing threat to the local population, national security forces, international military and international assistance efforts, and stressed the importance of the security and safety of the United Nations staff.  The members of the Security Council urged the Afghan authorities to make every effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.
