Press Statement by Security Council President on Democratic Republic of Congo

NEW YORK, 30 May (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement to the press was delivered today by Acting Security Council President Pascal Gayama (Congo):

The members of the Security Council condemn the attack against Nepalese troops from the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) perpetrated in Ituri last Sunday.

They extend their condolences to the Government of Nepal and to the relatives of the peacekeeper who was killed.

MONUC troops presently detained must be released without delay.  Those who detain them shall be held responsible for anything that might happen to them.

The members of the Security Council reaffirm their support for the operations of MONUC and pay tribute to the commitment of its personnel.
