VIENNA, 20 June (UN Information Service) -- The fourth Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, passed away on Thursday, 14 June 2007 in Vienna, Austria. Dr. Waldheim served two terms as Secretary-General, from 1972 through 1981. A memorial service for Dr. Waldheim was held by the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 15 June.
Dr. Waldheim's funeral will be held on Saturday, 23 June. Part of the ceremony will take place at the Memorial Plaza of the Vienna International Centre at approximately 12.00 hours, when the funeral procession arrives from Ballhausplatz before continuing on to the Vienna Zentralfriedhof.
The Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna, Antonio Maria Costa, will deliver a eulogy as the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Vienna. A Representative of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations (Vienna) will say a prayer, and military honours will be provided by Austrian United Nations troops and by officers of the United Nations Security and Safety Service.
The ceremony will be open to the public.
