New Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates Presents Credentials

VIENNA, 21 April (UN Information Service) - The new Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations (Vienna), Mohammed Hamad A. Omran al-Shamsi, presented his credentials today to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Antonio Maria Costa.

Mr. Omran al-Shamsi is also serving as Ambassador to Austria, a post which he assumed this year.

Mr. Omran al-Shamsi has served in many capacities in the course of his career, among them: Ambassador, Office of Foreign Affairs, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (since 2007), Ambassador, Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2006-07), Ambassador, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005-06), Ambassador to Tunisia (2003-05), Ambassador to Lebanon (1997-2003), Deputy Director, Department of Foreign Affairs (1996), Alternate Permanent Representative at the Mission of the United Arab Emirates and General Consulate, Geneva, Switzerland (1991-95), Second then First Secretary, Embassy of United Arab Emirates, Paris, France, and Deputy Representative to UNESCO, Paris, France (1988-91), Second Secretary, Permanent Mission to the United Nations, New York, United States (1986-88), and Third Secretary, Department of Political Affairs (1981-86).

Mr. Omran al-Shamsi holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of West Michigan, United States, and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the United Arab Emirates University. He speaks Arabic, English and some French.

Mr. Omran al-Shamsi is married and has three children.
