New Permanent Representative of Latvia
Presents Credentials

VIENNA, 8 October (UN Information Service) - The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Latvia, Gints Apals, presented his credentials today to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Yury Fedotov.

Mr. Apals has served in various capacities in the course of his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, among them: Director, Bilateral Relations Department (2010); Political Advisor, European Union Special Representative for Central Asia, General Secretariat of the Council of the EU (2005-2010); Administrator, Policy Planning and Early Warning Unit, General Secretariat of the Council of the EU (2004-2005); Deputy Director, EU Policy Department (2003-2004); Head of Unit, Bilateral Relations Department (2002-2003); First Secretary, Embassy of Latvia in Belgium (1997-2001); Advisor, Policy Planning Group (1996-1997) and Assistant to the State Minister (1994-1995).

Mr. Apals received a certificate in Diplomatic Studies at Oxford University in 1996. He holds a PhD from the Institute of History at the University of Latvia.

During his academic career he published widely on history, international politics and European affairs.

Mr. Apals is married with two daughters.
