UNIDO's New Institute to Focus on Sustainable Industrial Development and Negotiating Environmental Treaties
VIENNA, 24 October (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - A new Institute launched by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will offer training on key issues relating to sustainable industrial development and will serve as a catalyst for innovative solutions, ideas and partnerships needed to achieve inclusive and sustainable patterns of globalization.
This first executive programme of the UNIDO Institute for Capacity Development, titled "On top of the game: global strategies and negotiations towards green growth", is being delivered this week at the Hernstein Castle outside of Vienna. It brought together some 35 senior officials, including diplomats, from 30 countries.
An opening ceremony on Sunday was attended by the Director of the Vienna Diplomatic Academy, Hans Winkler.
"The UNIDO Institute for Capacity Development was established to respond effectively to the industrial development challenges being faced by Member States. It will also provide a sound knowledge base for officials from developing countries and countries with economies in transition taking part in negotiations on international environmental treaties at events like COP17 and the Rio+20 summit," said UNIDO Director-General Yumkella.
"We designed the Institute to serve as a 'virtual resource centre' for industrial development issues, including on Green Industry. It will help enhance the quality of industrial policy by generating, disseminating and sharing world-class knowledge resources and building capacities for sustainable industrial development, wealth creation, and accelerated economic growth," added Yumkella.
Green Industry and the Greening of Industries, concepts coined by UNIDO in the last few years, are helping place sustainable industrial development in the context of new global sustainability challenges.
In delivering the executive programme in Hernstein, UNIDO joined forces with Saïd Business School to design programmes that would combine the highest standards of academic rigour of Oxford University with the vast industrial policy and technology experience of UNIDO, as well as the participants' own experiences in current multilateral negotiations and policy challenges.
The course will be delivered by prominent scholars and experts in the field, among them Michael Gates of Richard Lewis Communications; Patrick Low, Chief Economist of the World Trade Organization; Gary Orren of the Harvard Kennedy School; Sherman Roberts of the University of Oxford; Sung-Hwan Son, Ambassador for Climate Change, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Republic of Korea; Ernst Ulrich Von Weizsaecker of the German Foundation for World Population; as well as several UNIDO senior managers.
The executive programme of the UNIDO Institute for Capacity Development is financially supported by the Government of Austria.
