International experts will discuss the current Post-2015 development process including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the need to mainstream mountain issues into current discussions, in particular, with regards to issues such as water, climate change, energy, forestry and biodiversity.

The organization of the event has been facilitated by UNEP Vienna - ISCC and UNIS Vienna in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water of Austria (Lebensministerium), the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), GRID Arendal (GRIDA), the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), the European Academy Bolzano (EURAC) and the Carpathian Convention. The International Mountain Day (11 December) provides an opportunity to create awareness about mountains, their importance to the global community, and to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development. "Mountains" have been successfully included in the Rio+20 outcome document "The Future We Want".
