VIENNA, 24 June 2013 (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - The Industrial Development Board of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) today recommended Li Yong of the People's Republic of China to be the Organization's next Director General.

He will be confirmed in this post on 28 June, during a special session of the UNIDO General Conference, the Organization's highest policymaking organ.

Li Yong competed against five other candidates, from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Italy, Poland and Thailand and, in an election earlier today, he polled the necessary two-thirds of the votes cast by the 53-member Industrial Development Board.

Li Yong will succeed Kandeh K. Yumkella of Sierra Leone, who has led UNIDO since 2005.

Other previous heads of UNIDO include Carlos Magariños (1997-2005); Mauricio de Maria y Campos (1993-1997); Domingo L. Siazon Jr. (1985-1993); Abd-El Rahman Khane (1975-1985); and Ibrahim Helmi Abdel-Rahman (1967-1974).
