Peruvian President Humala voices support for UNIDO General Conference to be held in Lima

NEW YORK/VIENNA, 23 September 2013 (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) -  The President of Peru, Ollanta Humala today voiced full support for the work of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and said his country will be proud to host the Organization's General Conference.

The Fifteenth Session of the UNIDO General Conference, under the theme "UNIDO: Towards partnerships for a new industrial revolution for inclusive and sustainable growth", will be held in Lima from 2 to 6 December.

Some 1,000 delegates, including high-level government officials from all continents, as well as representatives of the business community, UN organizations and academia, are expected to attend.

"By hosting the General Conference of UNIDO, Peru, and the Latin America region as a whole, would like to emphasize the importance of industry in the overall economic and social development and show how my country and the region have been cooperating with other regions and to explore new opportunities," said President Humala during his meeting today with UNIDO Director General, LI Yong, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Peru is a country that has experienced rapid economic growth in the past few years and is pursuing a strategy of economic diversification.

The UNIDO General Conference in Lima will serve as an opportunity for Member States to renew their commitment to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development, South-South and triangular cooperation, and strengthen the organization's mandate.

"Today, when the world is facing a range of global challenges, including on poverty eradication and job creation, industrialization remains the key driver for sustained economic growth, and UNIDO's mandate is even more relevant," said Director General Li.

As the specialized agency of the United Nations system mandated to promote industrial development and cooperation, UNIDO is well placed to make significant contributions to the post 2015 development framework as well as in the elaboration of the SDGs.
