Africa Industrialization Day to be marked in Vienna on 22 November

VIENNA, 15 November 2013  (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - This year's Africa Industrialization Day (AID) with the theme "Job Creation and Entrepreneurship Development: a means to accelerate industrialization in Africa", will be marked in Vienna on 22 November.

Job creation and entrepreneurship development represents a means to reduce poverty by empowering vulnerable communities and reinforce efforts towards a sustainable economic growth in Africa. The AID serves as an important occasion to reflect on the progress made and discuss the necessary efforts to achieve an inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

While youth and women are considered to be the driving force for social-economic development and innovation of our society, they are the ones who are most severely affected by a high rate of unemployment and underemployment.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will organize a symposium. The panel discussion will feature representatives of governments, the diplomatic corps, academia, the private sector, and heads of UN agencies.

The symposium will be from 3:00 to 5:30 pm, on 22 November, at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), and will be followed by a cocktail reception.

The annual commemoration of the Africa Industrialization Day was mandated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 44/237 of 22 December 1989.
