UNIS/OUS/234
7 March 2014
Re-issued as received
VIENNA, 7 March (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will assist Haiti in sustainable industrial development for inclusive growth and employment generation by developing the value addition of rural agro-value chains in support of the tourism industry in the northern part of the country.
A joint declaration on this was signed in Vienna today by UNIDO Director General, LI Yong, and the Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Haiti, Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin.
The new project will help bring together agro-value chains and creative industries in the form of a craft village, enhance the know-how in rural agro-value chains development, and offer local communities new skills in cultural design and entrepreneurship. It will also help connect rural communities with agri-businesses by establishing small processing units such as a cassava mill, a sugar cane distillery for the production of traditional rum, and a brick processing unit.
