VIENNA, 2 March (UN Information Service) - Mr. Pericles Gasparini Alves of Brazil was appointed as Chief of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) at Vienna, effective 2 March 2015.
From 2009 to 2015, Mr Gasparini Alves was Deputy Chief of the Conventional Arms Branch of UNODA in New York. From 2010 to 2013, he also chaired the Technical Review Panel that developed the International Ammunition Technical guidelines (IATG) that create international standards for the safety and security of ammunition storage facilities.
Prior to his latest post, Mr. Gasparini Alves was Director of the UNODA Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-LiREC) in Lima, Peru, from 1998 to 2009.
Mr. Gasparini Alves holds a PhD from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, on International Relations and has written several books and articles on a variety of peace, disarmament and arms regulations issues, including on chemical and nuclear weapons, small arms, missiles and confidence-building measures in space.
