2015 World Disasters Report:

"Focus on local actors, the key to humanitarian effectiveness"

Monday, 5 October 2015, from 14.00 - 16.00

Vienna International Centre (VIC), M Building, Room M2

This year's World Disasters Report focuses on local actors and their role at the centre of effective humanitarian action. The report explores current experiences and future trends regarding the roles of local actors in humanitarian work. Besides tracking humanitarian financing and discussing why local organizations often receive so little of it, the report also examines the challenges of entering into partnerships with local actors to deliver aid in insecure and inaccessible environments. Finally, the authors look at gaps in existing laws and norms concerning humanitarian relief and disaster risk management, focusing on how to better tailor humanitarian responses to the context and capacities of national actors.

Speakers include:

Mo Hamza
Editor of the World Disasters Report 2015 and Professor of Disaster Risk Management, University of Copenhagen, Senior Associate, Global Climate Adaptation Partnership (GCAP)

Werner Kerschbaum
Secretary General, Austrian Red Cross

Simonetta Di Pippo
Director, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, UNOOSA

Ursula Werther-Pietsch
Deputy Director Department VII.4, Austrian Ministry for Europe, Integration & Foreign Affairs
