VIENNA, 22 September - LI Yong, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), will hold a press briefing on Tuesday, 26 September during the second annual "BRIDGE for Cities - Belt and Road Initiative: Developing Green Economies for Cities" event being held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC).
"BRIDGE for Cities" will take place from 26 to 28 September 2017 and is designed to support the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, hailed by the UN General Assembly in December 2016 as a vehicle for economic integration in participating regions for the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The event comprises various activities, including a high-level policy dialogue, an exhibition, 'matchmaking' activities, study tours and cultural performances. Throughout the event, UNIDO will highlight cities' dependence on industrial development for economic and infrastructural growth, as well as industries' reliance upon resources readily available in urban areas.
"BRIDGE for Cities" will bring together over 500 participants, including representatives of municipal governments, the business sector, development agencies and academia. As of 20 September 2017, participants include representatives from over 131 cities in 65 countries and over 300 organizations, institutions and companies. The Mayors or Deputy Mayors of the cities of Lanzhou, Tirana, Kabul, Karachi, Luxor, Cairo, Nuremberg and Poznań will participate as panelists in the high-level forum proceedings.
