VIENNA, 17 July (UN Information Service) - The new Permanent Representative of Icelandto the United Nations (Vienna), Guðni Bragason, presented his credentials today to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Yury Fedotov.
Mr. Bragason started his professional career as Foreign News Editor at the Icelandic State Broadcasting Service TV in Reykjavík (1985-1988). He then served as Secretary to the Iceland-US Defence Council at the Defence Department, Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1988-1989); at the Division for Culture and Information, Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1989-1991); and First Secretary at the Embassy in Bonn, Germany (1991-1995).
In 1994-1995, Mr. Bragason served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) and Chargé d´Affaires to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). From 1995-1999 he served as Head of Division for International Organizations, Political Department, Ministry for Foreign Affairs; and as Chief of Protocol, Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1999-2001).
Mr. Bragason then served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy in Washington D.C. (2001-2005); Chargé d´Affaires at the Embassy in Rome and Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) (2005-2009); Director, Iceland Crisis Response Unit (ICRU), Ministry for Foreign Affairs (2009-2013).
Then, from 2013-2014 he served as Permanent Representative and Minister Plenipotentiary to FAO, WFP and IFAD in Rome; Senior Advisor to the Department for Fisheries and Aquaculture at the FAO in Rome (2015-2016); Director for Natural Resources and the Environment, Ministry for Foreign Affairs (2016-2017), and Chief of Protocol, Ministry for Foreign Affairs (2017-2018).
Mr. Bragason graduated from the Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich, Germany, with a degree in Literature and Communications (1983) and has a Master of Arts Degree in Journalism from New York University, USA (1985).
