Executive Director, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov:

Statement on International Day of Sport for Peace and Development

6 April 2018

VIENNA, 6 April 2018 (UN Information Service) - Sports inspire. They drive us to excellence, help us work together and teach us fair play.

Beyond their undeniable positive effects on health and well-being, sports can promote tolerance and respect, and expand opportunities.

For young men and women in particular, sports can help build resilience, empowering them to avoid risky behaviours and make positive choices.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is working with young people, sports organizations, non-governmental organizations and other partners to harness the power of sports in promoting a culture of lawfulness and preventing violence, drug use and crime.

Sports-based life skills training recognizes the mutually reinforcing aspects of health, education, equality, justice and social inclusion - all core objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On International Day of Sport for Peace and Development, I urge the international community to recognize the power of young people as agents for positive change, and the value of sports in promoting progress and making our societies safer.
